Rainy season honeymoon in Costa Rica: what it is really like
A rainy season (green season) honeymoon in Costa Rica means clear mornings, a heavy shower most afternoons, greener hills, fewer visitors and lower prices than the dry months. On the Pacific side the rains run from May to November, with September and October the wettest. Plan outdoor time for the morning, keep afternoons flexible, and the green season works for most couples.
We run Domos Mirador, three geodesic domes (Rustic, Panoramic, Transparent) in the hills of Montes de Oro, Puntarenas, about 1 h 45 min from SJO airport. This guide is written this September, in the wettest stretch of the year, from what we see outside our own windows.
Quick facts
- Month: September 2026, the wettest stretch of the Pacific rainy season (May to November)
- Rain pattern: mornings usually clear, rain mid-afternoon
- Rate: from $214 per night for two, best rate booking direct
- Distance: about 1 h 45 min from SJO airport; the last 15 minutes are uphill from the Interamericana on a gravel road any car can handle
Month by month, May to November
May. The first rains arrive, usually as short afternoon showers. The brown hills of April turn green within a few weeks. Mornings are hot and clear.
June. The pattern settles in: sun until early afternoon, a shower of an hour or two, then a calm evening.
July. Some years bring a short drier spell in late June or early July. On the South Pacific coast the humpback whales start to arrive, and they stay until roughly October.
August. Much like June. Rivers are full and the waterfalls are getting strong.
September. The rain builds. Afternoon storms last longer, some days stay overcast, and waterfalls are at their strongest. Mornings still tend to be clear.
October. The wettest month on the Pacific. Some afternoons rain into the night, and some years a wet spell settles in for a few days. This is the month to be most careful with.
November. The transition. Rain tapers through the month and the dry season usually begins by its end. The hills are still deep green and visitors are few.
Where the rain matters less: mountains vs beach
The Pacific beaches take the full weight of September and October. Sand is damp and a beach afternoon often ends under a roof. If the beach is the point, those are the two hardest months on this coast.
The Caribbean side is the exception. Its weather runs on a different calendar, and September and October are usually among its drier months, so Puerto Viejo and the south Caribbean pair well with a green season trip.
Mountains handle the rain better than either coast, in our experience. At Domos Mirador the domes sit in the hills of Montes de Oro with a sunset view across the Gulf of Nicoya. When the afternoon shower comes through, you are on your own terrace with a private hot tub, not on a wet beach towel. When it passes, which it often does before sunset, the air is washed clean and the view is at its sharpest. If you are weighing a dome against a beach resort for the honeymoon, we compare the two here: Transparent Dome vs resort honeymoon.
One practical note: the gravel road up from the Interamericana takes about 15 minutes and any car can handle it, but rain slows the roads, so add time to any drive and in October arrive before dark.
The green-season honeymoon day
Morning is for going out. The sky is clear and the light is soft. The Brisa de Oro coffee farm is minutes away and fits neatly before the clouds build. Trails, drives and any tour worth doing belong before noon.
By early afternoon you are back. The shower arrives mid-afternoon, and this is when the domes earn their keep. The private hot tub is on your terrace, so you can sit in warm water while the rain comes down around you. The outdoor rain shower is a different experience with real rain falling beside it. In the Transparent Dome you lie on the bed and watch the water run down the clear ceiling.
Then the clearing. Many evenings the rain stops, the clouds break to the west and the sunset over the Gulf of Nicoya arrives with a rinsed sky. The chef serves the private three-course dinner at your dome around now, and it is the hour we suggest for a proposal; our guide on where to propose in Costa Rica covers the timing.
Night. After rain, the sky often clears. The stargazing net and the clear ceiling of the Transparent Dome are at their best on those nights. June and November give you the better chance of stars; October brings the fewest clear nights, so expect cloud. A couples massage in the dome with rain on the roof is the fallback, and it is not a bad one.
Costs: what you save
Green season is Costa Rica's low season, with one caveat: July and August, when North American and European summer holidays bring a busier spell and higher fares. Outside those two months, flights are typically cheaper than in the December to April peak, and car rental, tours and most hotels drop their prices. You are not competing for tables, guides or parking.
Our rates start from $214 per night for two, and the best rate is booking direct. Green season also brings more open dates, an easier time getting the dome you want, and room in the budget for the honeymoon package or a couples massage.
Our honest take: who should come, who should wait
Come in the green season if you want privacy, slow mornings and long evenings, if you are happy to spend the afternoon in a hot tub while it rains, if whales are on your list (South Pacific, July to October), or if you are combining the mountains with the Caribbean coast. Come in May, June, early July or November if you want the green without the heaviest rain. Come in September or October if the budget matters more than the odds of a dry afternoon.
Wait for the dry season if your honeymoon is built around Pacific beach days, especially in September and October. Wait if you need a clear sky every night, for photographs or for the stars, because October will not give you that. Wait if humidity wears you down, if you plan long drives every day, or if an afternoon indoors sounds like a lost day rather than a found one. December to April is the right answer for those couples, and those months fill early, so book ahead.
Neither choice is wrong. They are different honeymoons.
If the green season sounds like your kind of trip, see the honeymoon package and the proposal packages. The private dinner, couples massage, rose petals, decoration and custom "Marry Me?" letters are all available at the dome. Send us your dates and we will tell you plainly what the weather is likely to do.
