Costa Rica in October: why the green season is the romantic secret

October is the peak of Costa Rica's green season: one of the two wettest months on the Pacific side, and the quietest and greenest. For couples, that trade works. Mornings are usually clear, rain arrives mid-afternoon, and the hills empty out. That is why green season is the romantic secret. The condition is planning around the rain, not against it.

Written in September 2026, this is the honest version, including who should wait for the dry season.

What the weather really does in October

Costa Rica's rainy season runs from May to November. On the Pacific side, where Domos Mirador sits in the hills of Montes de Oro, Puntarenas, September and October are the two wettest months of the year. "Wettest" describes monthly totals, not what a day looks like.

The typical October day follows a pattern. Dawn is usually clear, the sky stays mostly blue through late morning, clouds build after lunch, and mid-afternoon a heavy shower comes through, often for an hour or two. By early evening it has usually moved on and the view over the Gulf of Nicoya is washed clean. Nights are often clear again.

Two other things matter. The first is geography: the Caribbean side runs on a different calendar, and September and October are among its drier months. The second is wildlife: humpback whales are in the South Pacific waters roughly July to October, so early October is the tail end of that season.

Quick facts

Why couples choose green season

The first reason is space. Dry-season crowds are gone. Roads are quieter, restaurants have tables, and the Brisa de Oro coffee farm, minutes from the domes, can feel like you have it to yourselves.

The second is color. By the end of the dry season, which runs December to April, the hills have faded. In October they are the deepest green of the year, and the afternoon clouds over the Gulf of Nicoya give the property its best light, before and after each storm.

The third is permission. Rain at three in the afternoon removes the pressure to be somewhere. A couple that would otherwise be driving to a fourth waterfall ends up in the hot tub on their own terrace, watching the shower cross the valley. For a romantic trip, that is not a compromise. It is the point.

The fourth is practical. Rates start at $214 per night for two, and the best rate at Domos Mirador is the one you get booking direct.

Now the honest part: who should not come in October. If your trip depends on a specific outdoor activity every day, if you are chasing a tan, or if you need guaranteed dry light for a photo session at a fixed hour, book December to April instead. The same goes for anyone who gets tense when plans change, because in October plans change. Humidity is high, trails are muddy, and rural roads elsewhere in the country get rough. If that is a deal breaker, the dry season will suit you better and we would rather say so now.

A rainy-season day at Domos Mirador

You wake early because the light does it for you. Of the three domes (Rustic, Panoramic, Transparent), the Transparent Dome has a clear ceiling, so the first thing you see is the sky going from grey to pink.

The morning is for being outside: Brisa de Oro coffee farm is minutes away. Be back at the dome as the clouds gather over the ridge.

Then the rain comes, and the afternoon happens in and around the dome. The private hot tub is on the terrace, so you are in warm water while the shower moves across the hills. The outdoor rain shower afterwards feels different when the air itself is raining. If you booked a couples massage, this is the hour for it, inside the dome with the rain on the shell.

By late afternoon the sky is often breaking up. Some evenings the sunset over the Gulf of Nicoya comes through the gaps in gold and orange. Other evenings the cloud stays and you get a soft grey dusk. Both are real October outcomes.

Dinner is the private three-course dinner served at the dome by the chef. If the sky has cleared, the stargazing net is where the night ends; if not, the sound of rain on a dome is the next best thing. More on the terrace and hot tub in our guide to glamping with a private jacuzzi in Costa Rica.

What to pack

October packing is about drying, not staying dry.

No boots needed for the drive. The road up from the Interamericana is 15 minutes of gravel that any car can handle, but plan to arrive with daylight to spare.

Is October a good time for a honeymoon in Costa Rica?

Yes, if your idea of a honeymoon is time with each other rather than a checklist of activities. October's rhythm, active mornings and slow rainy afternoons, suits couples who want to be together more than busy. It suits proposals too: a rainy afternoon in a dome with rose petals, decoration and a custom "Marry Me?" letter is a proposal nobody else is watching. We have written more about that in where to propose in Costa Rica. The same kind of package exists for honeymoons and anniversaries.

It is a poor fit if you need certainty. A honeymoon that has to include a specific beach, sunset or hike on a specific day belongs in the dry season. If you are weighing the domes against a beach resort, our comparison of a transparent dome versus a resort honeymoon sets the two side by side.

October will not give you a dry trip. It will give you green hills, empty roads, and afternoons where the only sensible plan is a hot tub and each other. If that sounds like your honeymoon, our honeymoon packages are built for it, and if you are planning the question first, the proposal packages are too.
